Sulafa Elyas/

Singer, oud player, actress

The magnificent voice of Sulafa Elyas brings together traditional Sudanese song and modern music. An oud player, this multi-talented musician is the first artist from Sudan to take up a residency at Les Dominicains. A journey into the colourful world of Sulafa, to encounter the mix of influences, genres and cultures, all with finesse and poetry.

Residence project:

Sulafa Elyas is working with Mama Chap to develop her own musical project. During the NORA residency, she will be able to move forward with peace of mind on selecting the musicians who will accompany her on her first album, recording it, selecting the musicians who will perform live, and the first rehearsals. The residency will also provide an opportunity to make progress on the artistic choices outside the music (photos, videos, set design) with the help of Maxime Kosinetz, the sound engineer who is accompanying Sulafa Elyas in the recording, composition and mixing. This album returns to the singer's roots, taking its inspiration from traditional Sudanese songs and the songs Sulafa Elyas heard from her grandfather and grandmother.

Collaboration with Dominique Dalcan

Dominique Dalcan (Victoire de la musique electronic music album 2018) sings about his Lebanese roots for the first time on the album ‘Last night a woman saved my life’, to be released in September 2023. He is accompanied by some of the great female voices of the Arab world (including Souad Massi, Lynn Adib...). Sulafa has also been invited to collaborate on a track on the album. On stage, the concert is based on free vocals in Arabic, English and French, and features acoustic instruments from the guests' regions, in perfect cohabitation with electronic textures, similar to “Temperance”, Dominique Dalcan's previous modernist albums. It will tour from autumn 2023 and through 2024. Sulafa will be invited to take part in the tour.

Dates of residency : from 23/02 to 9/03/2024
