Alena Olasyuk is a Ukrainian artist who resided in Beijing for 12 years before spending time in Vienna and eventually settling in Paris. She obtained her degree in Art and Journalism from the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, where she held her debut solo exhibition "Three Steps" in 2014, with the event organized by Stage One Event Company. Over the course of her career, she has participated in various solo and group exhibitions across China, Taiwan, and Ukraine.
Notably, she was featured in the Curitiba Biennale exhibition in Brazil, which spotlighted Chinese contemporary art in 2017. Additionally, she has collaborated with renowned brands such as Peugeot, WHAT FOR, Laundry by Shelli Segal, and more.
“In my art, I explore the dualities of life—the simplicity of basics and their inherent complexity. Just as existence can be simultaneously simple and complex, I draw inspiration directly from life itself. I aim to represent the contrast between controlled and uncontrolled efforts, expressing intention and spontaneity through the use of Chinese Ink and various additional materials, exploring a multitude of ways to repeat lines or works.
My artistic goal is to achieve pure honesty and simplicity in expression, imbuing my work with profound meaning. It's not about influence, truth, or the world, but about the essence of simple existence—the basics, the banalities, life itself.”
Residency project:
"For 11 years, I have been immersed in the creation of lines using Chinese ink, pushing the boundaries of expression while keenly observing the emergence of new textures and patterns. The simplicity inherent in my work gives rise to profound meanings, influenced by both my internal state and the surrounding environment.
In my artistic pursuit, the ultimate goal is to embrace the purity of meaning and the honesty of intention. Having embarked on a visual exploration journey in China and Ukraine, I have recently found a new home in France due to the impact of war. Now, in this new setting, I aim to delve into the influence of this place on my artistic expression.
By immersing myself in the rich heritage and history of France, I seek to reflect on my artistic evolution and my relationship with lines and the depth of black ink. The residency offers a unique opportunity for focused contemplation and tranquility, allowing me to retrospectively examine the past months and years, and let this experience manifest in the continued exploration of lines. Simultaneously, I plan to document this research in writing, culminating in a publication that encapsulates the essence of my artistic journey during this residency.
The project will culminate in a curated collection of artworks crafted with Chinese ink, Nib pen, and potentially incorporating new materials inspired by the unique environment of the residency. These works, presented on paper, will visually represent the evolution and exploration of my artistic practice during the residency.
Additionally, the project will yield a comprehensive body of texts. These written reflections will delve into the intricate themes of lines, process, and the nuanced exploration of blackness within my artistic works. This dual outcome aims to not only showcase the tangible artistic creations but also provide a thoughtful and introspective narrative that encapsulates the essence of my residency experience."
